What does career aka mean?

For seven out of ten students, school is not inclusive. A survey of Skuola.net in the aftermath of the case of Rome: a teacher did not recognize the career aka of a student who has embarked on the path of transition. The professor marked as an error the signature of the test in class which reported the new gender chosen by the pupil. The Roman high school in which the case took place provides for the personalized study plan for people in transition and the regulation for the career alias which allows each student to define himself with the name of choice. According to the survey, it is not an isolated event, but it happens in many schools in particular where there has not yet been such a formal opening.

What is career aka

This is the name given to the possibility given by some institutions to students transgender who do not recognize themselves in the gender assigned at birth, that of biological sex, to have their gender identity recognized, using a name other than the personal one, the one registered on the documents at birth, but also at the time of enrollment in school.

First came the universities and then the colleges. Thus explains the career aka the regulation of Ripetta high school in Rome, one of the first to do so in Italy. “Activation of the alias career can be requested by the family of a minor pupil or by the adult pupil who can demonstrate that he has undertaken a psychological and / or medical path aimed at allowing any rectification of the attribution of sex and wishes to use a name other than the registry one “.
Children can therefore decide to be called with the chosen name and not with the one deposited in the registry office and given at the time of registration. The goal is “guarantee female students and students in gender transition the opportunity to live in a peaceful study environmentattentive to the protection of the privacy and dignity of the individual, suitable for fostering interpersonal relationships so that they are marked by fairness and mutual respect for the freedoms and inviolability of the person “.

The activation of this path can be prior to the completion of the transition path and has no value outside the school. For those who start this journey the old name is dead, dead namein English, but it is also one of the strongest legacies to disappear, the greatest link with an identity that you no longer want to recognize.

The survey

The Skuola.net survey, which involved 1,800 high school pupils, says that 44% of the girls and boys involved feel that issues such as sexual orientation and gender identity are little considered in their school. 34% say these topics are almost taboo in their institution. There is also a 17% who is divided between those who tend to be against it and those who are absolutely against it.

Just 10% say that the alias career has been activated in their school. 50% say it does not exist and is not being activated even if there are students who would request it. All the others, on the other hand, say they have no information about it or have no schoolmates who might need it. Only 17% of respondents say they have neutral bathrooms. Only 28% say that there is a climate of inclusiveness and integration towards the Lgbtqi + community at school.

The opposition

There is a position of clear opposition expressed by the Onlus Pro Vita & Famiglia. The spokesman Jacopo Coghe explains in a note. “Maximum solidarity with the teacher of the Liceo Cavour in Rome who rightly refused to submit to the so-called” career alias “, an ideological and harmful regulation for young people but above all totally illegal, devoid of any legal basis and contrary to numerous civil, administrative rules and penalties. The school has no power to alter the personal data of minors in documents and internal deeds on the basis of self-declarations or therapeutic paths that have not led to definitive diagnoses and the sentence of re-attribution of sex as required by Italian law on the subject. The school community cannot be forced to uncritically adapt to a student’s subjective perception of their own identity, especially in a cultural juncture in which young people are bombarded by the real fashion of fluid identity ».
