What does Soltz’s visit to Greece symbolize?

The arrival of a German chancellor in Greece is news regardless of the circumstances. The last visits of the current predecessor Chancellor Soltzof Angela Merkel in our country took place in turbulent times, in times of memoranda and were accompanied by dissatisfaction of a large part of the population that reacted to the imposed harsh austerity policies.

The Greece of the memoranda, however, has nothing to do with today’s Greece. The country, now trying to repay its loans and not do fiscal acrobatics, is facing crises such as the pandemic and is also a country that has managed to convince many of its partners that it is fully complying with its commitments.

What has not changed, however, is that Greece has and will have a particularly aggressive neighbor from the east. For this reason, it is trying to build alliances especially with the so-called great powers of the European continent and not to ask but to “demand” their support.

However, like our country, Germany has entered another era, in the post-Merkel period with Olaf Solz at the helm at a very critical time for Europe and the whole western world. With a war raging on European soil, with the energy crisis saying no to end and with the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean beginning to resemble the summer of 2020, the manipulations required are subtle.

German Chancellor Olaf Solz will be in Thessaloniki on June 10 at the invitation of the Prime Minister.

This high-level arrival next week in Greece has many symbolisms.

The German Chancellor, as part of a wider trip to the countries of the Western Balkans, will first travel to Serbia and Kosovo on the 10th of the month, while On the evening of June 10, he was invited by the Greek Prime Minister for a working dinner in Thessaloniki, together with representatives of the thirteen countries of the South East European Cooperation Process – in which Turkey also participates. And this will be of great interest and many symbolisms.

Athens did not hide its annoyance after the declaration of equal distances between Greece and Turkey by a German government official. On the other hand, he is well aware of the balances in the EU. May 30 was the day that Kyriakos Mitsotakis decided to do what it did in the US. In other words, the German Chancellor should become a partner in the Turkish provocation and expansionism, as well as in the revisionist stance he is holding with Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the helm of the country.

So, a day later, on the sidelines of the Summit, Olaf Solz saw with his own eyes the map of the “Blue Homeland”, he learned how many violations and overflights in Greek airspace have been committed by Turkish fighters, events that can not go unnoticed or unanswered.

So, Germany condemnedits leadership accepted the invitation to come to Thessaloniki and the game seems to be turning towards Athens.

“It is very important that at this stage, Germany chooses Greece and not another country in our region as an equal interlocutor”stressed a government official in Newsbeast.

He also noted that that also will be discussed between the two leaders will be our cooperation against the background of the war in Ukraine. For the record, all mediation efforts made so far by Ankara to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine have failed. It is therefore considered a brilliant opportunity for Athens to once again show its position on this issue.

Immediately after Thessaloniki, Olaf Solz will go to Northern Macedonia and finally to Bulgaria.
