What does the construction of the LNG Terminal in Alexandroupolis mean for our country

By Dimitris Gatsios

In a period of energy turmoil and geostrategic upheaval due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Athens continues to add pieces to the puzzle of the big picture related to the country’s energy shielding. In this context, this morning comes to the fore another move with double targeting, pending the unveiling of the new national plan of the government to address the significant increases in electricity and gas bills. And this move is none other than the construction of the floating Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal of Alexandroupolis, the implementation of which:

-It will play a key role in the energy security of the country, the wider Balkans and the whole of Southeastern Europe.

– It will be another step, as noted by government officials, in the transformation of Greece into an energy hub.

The Prime Minister arrives this morning in the capital of Evros, while a characteristic element of the importance of the implementation of the Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal in Alexandroupolis not only for our region, but also for the European Union is the fact that the “present” will The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuτςiτς, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Kiril Petkov, and the Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovaτσevski.

The floating liquefied natural gas terminal, the completion of which is scheduled for 2023, will be the new energy gateway for Greece, the Balkans and Southeastern Europe. Alongside:

-It will further enhance energy security and energy independence.

-It will offer the possibility of differentiation of the sources and supply routes of the area in natural gas.

-It will give impetus to regional cooperation, as virtually all Balkan countries participate in the project.

“The Alexandroupolis floating terminal will help achieve the European Union’s goal of phasing out its dependence on Russian gas as soon as possible, as decided by the March European Council. The project will also offer new sources and routes for natural gas supply. and will strengthen the security of supply in Greece, Bulgaria and other countries in the region “, commented the representative of Mr. Michel, a few hours before the arrival of the President of the European Council in our country.

The Alexandroupolis terminal aims to create a fourth gas import gate in our country, with a capacity of up to 700,000 cubic meters per hour or 6.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. It is indicative that in our country the consumption is six billion cubic meters, in Bulgaria 3.5 billion cubic meters and in Romania eleven million cubic meters. At the same time, it will ensure new quantities of natural gas for the supply of the Greek and the regional market of Southeastern Europe, contributing to the expansion of sources and routes of gas supply, to the promotion of competition for the benefit of the final consumer, to the security of Greece and Balkan countries, but also in improving the reliability and flexibility of the National Natural Gas System.

In the “battle” every available resource

At the same time and with a view to the internal shocks from the effects of the energy vise, Maximos Palace and financial staff are determined to use every available resource to support consumers, without derailing the fiscal balance and this is evident from the public attitudes of both of the Prime Minister, as well as top government officials. In this context, a longer-term strategy (six months for example) is proposed that will “embrace” society horizontally, with internal government meetings intensifying, with the aim of bringing to the fore the announcements made by the Prime Minister.

The new support package is expected to include a ceiling on the wholesale price of electricity, but also a significant intervention in the adjustment clause. “With the intervention we will make, people will see much smaller bills than they have seen lately. There are continuous meetings, so that the exact financial and financial amount of the intervention can be determined. It will not be a little money, they will touch the “We all understand that society can not stand it,” said (Mega) the government spokesman, Giannis Oikonomou, with the time of the prime minister’s announcements now counting down.
