Through a partnership with Samsung, Royal DSM is helping to collect old nets strewn along the coastline of the Indian Ocean. The nets are then cut, cleaned and molded under pressure. The result is a sustainable material that is made from at least 80% recycled polyamide or nylon. Samsung then works with polymer company Hanwha Compound to optimize the performance of the new material so it can be used in smartphones. It is processed into high-performance polyamide resins, which contain at least 20% plastic from old fishing nets. Samsung is now using recycled polyamide resins in key elements of the S Pen in the Galaxy S22 series – the key bracket and the inner case.
