What happened to Peng Shuai?

More than 15 days have passed since the last time there was news of the Chinese champion Peng Shuai. It was November 2nd. The tennis player had written on the web her accusation: having suffered sexual violence from Zhang Gaoli, 75-year-old former deputy premier and former member of the political bureau of the Communist Party of Beijing. She said she had no evidence to back up her accusation, but asked to be believed.

The rest of the world is now also looking for it with the hashtag #WhereIsPengShuai, China is trying to delete it. The censorship of Beijing immediately deleted the post of complaint and obscured the social profile of the tennis player, it is impossible to search on the net about her. The Wta, Women’s Tennis Association, asks for news of the tennis player and a transparent investigation into the case of sexual violence.

To try to dispel doubts about his fate, the state television in English, not seen by the population, showed a screenshot, a copy of an e-mail from Peng Shuai. In the text, addressed to the president of the WTA, the tennis player says that she is fine and is not subject to restrictions. In addition, the denial: he was not attacked. He just needs rest and for this reason he asks the Association not to deal with the affair: “The news published, including the one about sexual violence, are not true.”

WTA president Steve Simon doesn’t believe these are Peng Shuai’s words. “It increases my concern about his safety, it’s hard to believe he actually wrote the email. It must be able to speak freely, it must be heard, his allegations deserve an investigation“. The fact that the doubles champion at Wimbledon and Roland Garros does not appear in public does not convince him or his colleagues and colleagues. Novak Djokovic, the world number one, Billie Jean King, the champion of the battle of the sexes, and the Japanese Naomi Osaka, whose profiles were blacked out in China, made their voices heard.

Beijing chooses silence and darkness. The goal is to bury the case and the news, but the rest of the world doesn’t want to stand by and act and want to find Peng Shuai.
