What is “cardiogenic shock”, the cause of the death of the dog Joca

The medical report from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at USP obtained by CNN pointed out that the dog Joca, a golden retriever who died on a GOL flight in April, died from cardiogenic shock.

According to veterinarian and cardiologist Fabiana Pereira, cardiogenic shock is when the heart stops beating. The organ fails to pump blood to the body, causing serious damage.

The condition results in an immediate drop in blood pressure, preventing oxygen from reaching tissues such as the brain, kidneys and heart itself. This can lead to multiple organ failure.

“Shock is the last moment before death. A very stressful situation, followed by a spike in adrenaline, can generate an arrhythmia, for example, which can result in cardiac arrest,” he explains.

Dr. Fátima Martins, a veterinarian who analyzed the USP report, told CNN that the dog’s shock may have been caused by hyperthermia.

Hyperthermia, when the body reaches a temperature above normal, can also cause the condition that killed Joca. “It affects the entire body and the circulatory system collapses. This can lead to arrhythmias and, therefore, cardiogenic shock,” adds Fabiana.

Veterinarian Fátima emphasizes that hyperthermia is an emergency and needs to be treated quickly by a doctor. “It is extremely serious and can lead to death.”

The medical report concluded that Joca had “significant cardiac alterations” that could justify the reported condition. However, the specialist says that it would only be an aggravating condition and that the cause of the cardiogenic shock would be the stress suffered during the flight.

A CNN asked GOL for a statement on the results of the medical report, but has not yet received a response.

Remember the case

A five-year-old Golden Retriever dog, Joca, was returned dead to his owner, engineer João Fantazzini, after a GOL Linhas Aéreas flight on April 22.

The aircraft carrying the animal left Guarulhos Airport in São Paulo for Sinop Airport in Mato Grosso. However, the route was diverted to Fortaleza in Ceará due to an “operational failure,” according to the airline.

Due to the change, the dog was on the journey for seven hours. The box that transported Joca had the wrong label, labeled with the destination of Manaus and with the name of another animal, called Kiara.

According to João, the golden retriever’s veterinarian had given him a medical certificate for the trip, indicating that the animal was fit to travel for two hours.
