Not a sumptuous court banquet, but something much more democratic, in the same style that led to the invitation of almost three thousand “common” subjects to Meghan and Harry’s wedding: theThe “Coronation Big Lunch”, one of the novelties announced by Buckingham Palace for the investiture ceremony of King Charles IIIit will in fact be a great moment of collective celebration.
An event that makes its appearance between the official details told by Palazzo for the big daythe one which will see the coronation of HM the King and HM the Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey Saturday 6 May 2023.
“Communities across the UK are invited to share food and have fun together at the Coronation Big Lunches, taking place on Sunday 7 May 2023, in a national act of celebration and friendship,” reads the British Royals website. «From a cup of tea with a neighbor at a street party, the Coronation Big Lunch brings the festivities to the neighborhoods, and it’s a way to get to know one’s own community better». A great national holiday, therefore, which sees food as the central element of sharing and meeting, as well as celebrating the new King.
How can you participate
To organize the coronation Big Lunch, a team and a website was made available to citizens, supervised by the Eden Project. That’s enough sign up for the initiative to receive the “pack” dedicated to the event, which contains “fun ideas and useful tips, practical advice and much more”. The goal is to create thousands of events across the UKbringing people to the streets, parks and venues to join the coronation celebrations and mark this historic landmark.
«A Big Lunch can be anything from a small gathering in a garden, park or driveway, to a larger party with trestle tables in the middle of the street», explains the Eden Project website, an association that deals with community projects and sharing between people. «The idea is that starting in a simple way, friendships, ideas and projects of all kinds can be born from a Big Lunch»: in short, that food can be a vehicle for building something, talking about common problems and perhaps finding solutions together .
«Organizing a Big Lunch shouldn’t be too complicated, nor require a lot of resources or money», continues the association. Just choose a date – over the weekend of May 6-8, but also any time in June, during the «Month of Community», the month of the community, or even a «Lunar Lunch», a banquet in the middle of the night, designed to do something less conventional but also to include those who fast during Ramadan, or those who work irregular shifts. Then, you invite the neighborhood. It is essential to make flags – tutorials and models are provided by the organization for doing so – also including the children and participating in the award ceremony for the best decorated lunch in the Kingdom. All participants are asked to bring something – there are too specific recipes made available – or simply to take your own meal with you, and then have fun, with music, street games and anything else you think of doing to share a day of celebration.
The event may also be associated with a good cause – many people will use their Big Lunch to raise money for a community cause or national charity. Obviously, social activity is recommended and essential for the success of a large-scale event: all organizers and participants are in fact asked to share their story, using the hashtag #TheBigLunch #TheCoronationBigLunch on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
