New questions about his possibly unhealthy state of health Recep Tayyip Erdogan sparked his appearance a few days ago in a televised address on the occasion of his Muslim holiday Kurban Bayram. During the sermon, Erdogan appeared very sleepy and “chewed” his words, speaking incoherently. At one point he let out a sigh and closed his eyelids for a second before recovering.
Erdogan ended his speech, but the video aired the Turkish news agency Anadolu, sparking concerns about his health.
“The transmission of these images is really embarrassing.” commented Habertürk columnist Fatih Altaili to the Turkish media, implying that someone from the president’s entourage deliberately leaked the material in order to tarnish his image. But the communications director of the Turkish presidency, Fahrettin Altun, blamed Altaili for “Misinformation and lies”.
The cases of drowsiness
The incident was not the first to spark concerns about the Turkish president’s health. Four years ago, during a press conference with the then President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, Erdogan yawned and fell asleep, forcing the Ukrainian leader to discreetly slap his hand on the office to help Erdogan stay alert.
Last February, a video was leaked showing Erdogan, after the end of his party’s congress in Istanbul, descending some stairs supported by his wife Emine and an associate.
Turkish Public Health Specialist Ahmet Saltik said that in the opinion of the psychiatrist Khaki Akalin, living in Switzerland, Erdogan’s situation refers to epilepsy. However, journalist Akif Becky, who was a spokesman for the prime minister’s office at the time, said Erdogan was not ill but had suffered hypoglycemia.
