What is hydrolipo, a procedure that caused the death of a woman at an aesthetic clinic in SP

Paloma Lopes Alves, 31 years old, died after undergoing a hydrolipo at the Maná Day clinic, in the east of São Paulo, this Tuesday (26).

The woman underwent the aesthetic procedure on her back and abdomen. During the process, she entered into cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA) and did not recover.

Hydrolipo is a liposuction technique that aims to remove localized fat from the body. However, the procedure is carried out only with local anesthesia and the patient is awake during operation.

According to the Brazilian Hydroliposuction Center (CBH), the applied anesthetic acts on fat cells and then this fat mass can be suctioned out of the body through cannulas.

Typically, surgery is performed on the abdomen, upper and lower back, arms, thighs and knee. The removed fat can be used for increase buttocks, breasts cheeks and even lips.

CBH also explains that hydrolipo is recommended for women and men over 18 years of age, who do not have previous illnesses, according to medical evaluation.

The intervention does not require hospitalization and lasts around 2 to 3 hours, and can be carried out in an aesthetic clinic, according to the CBH. The Center emphasizes that the technique requires pre-operative exams, use of a compression garment, lymphatic drainage or tissue release and use of antibiotics and analgesics.

According to the Police Report obtained by CNN the 31-year-old woman underwent the aesthetic procedure on her back and abdomen, but during the treatment, she went into irreversible cardiorespiratory arrest.

She was expected to be discharged late this Tuesday afternoon (26).

As soon as she went into cardiorespiratory arrest, EMS was called and she was taken to Tatuapé Municipal Hospital, where the victim arrived dead. In the hospital unit, pulmonary embolism was identified as the probable cause of death.

The procedure had been contracted through social networks and payment made by bank transfers.

On social media, Paloma’s husband posted about what happened and said he would inform the location of the wake.
