What is judged for Al. Tsipras at the polls of SYRIZA

By Niki Zorba

Today (Sunday) the internal party polls open in SYRIZA for the election of the president and the new Central Committee, with Alexis Tsipras having sent a wide invitation to participate in this “celebration of Democracy”, as the party calls it.

The spotlight will fall on the number that will come to vote for Alexis Tsipras for president of SYRIZA (as there is no other candidate). The internal party process is judged in terms of communication, since anyone who wishes to vote for president has the right to vote, register with SYRIZA and pay 3 euros for his participation.

Correlations

On the contrary, for the ballot box of the new Central Committee, which will emerge for the first time not from the congress, but directly from the party base, such an opportunity is not given to those coming at the … last minute.

Guaranteed right to vote at the ballot box for the new K.E. have those who had registered with SYRIZA until March 21. However, this is also the ballot box for whether Alexis Tsipras will repeat the overwhelming victory he scored at the recent SYRIZA conference, where he won 75% against “Umbrella”.

Both parties, however, do not consider that the presidential-“Umbrella” relations will change dramatically at Sunday’s ballot. One question is, of course, which executives and from which presidential parties (Members’ Movement, Pasokogenes, RENE, “non-affiliated” presidents, etc.) will manage to be elected in the new Central Committee, which will now have 300 members. The 50% quota for women, and the quota for those from the “Alliance”, upsets the balance considerably.

Hence, all the previous days, the information from the Prefectures across the Territory was converging that the battle between presidents and … presidents was fierce and personal now, with “list fights” that in some cases even reached “hot” episodes between rivals of the same party.

These incidents leave “Umbrella” indifferent, as she claims. Its members are struggling to record 26% or more in the correlations of the Central Committee, in order to secure what they were saying after the end of the 3rd SYRIZA conference: We are a strong, distinct trend.

Rehearsal

For Alexis Tsipras, however, tomorrow (Sunday) closes a circle that he himself opened on the night of the national elections: Transformation and expansion of SYRIZA so that its social power (32%) corresponds to the party one.

The president of SYRIZA went through a few internal party storms along the way until he completed his plan. Extreme internal party polarization and dualism, squabbles and quarrels, calls for the transformation of SYRIZA into a leader-centered party from its left, calls for “timidity” to control its party and the “weights” from its right.

The internal party disagreements did not subside and the internal party wounds did not heal, but the new SYRIZA of Alexis Tsipras (thanks to the battle of the national elections, which is ahead) is rallying as it always does, despite the internal conflicts.

Sunday’s ballot for Mr. Tsipras will show how “loose” his hands are for the next day of him and SYRIZA. It has given the character of “rehearsal” of national elections in the process, that is why the bar is – and numerically – high for SYRIZA. Nobody talks about numbers, they only live in predictions that are completely optimistic that the participation will positively surprise both friends and opponents. It should be noted that SYRIZA to date has about 60,000 members.

Rehearsal of national elections, therefore, for Alexis Tsipras and SYRIZA, the 1,000 ballot boxes set up by Koumoundourou, where the president asks him to send a message of “political change” against the government.

According to information, the preparation made by Koumoundourou to welcome the result of the process will be similar. From there, on Sunday night, the result will be announced, in the presence of journalists, like a normal election night.

Estimates, moreover, in Koumoundourou about when Kyriakos Mitsotakis will decide to go to the polls vary, but the dominant one is the one who brings the prime minister to choose not to run out of four years.

The next day of the ballot box will find SYRIZA in a new – and intra-party – scenario. The new Central Committee will meet within 15 days, most likely, with a question whether there will be a change of secretary or whether Dimitris Tzanakopoulos will continue from the same post. The information from the “central” says that the president’s wish is for the current secretary to remain in his position, but D. Tzanakopoulos himself will decide this after the completion of the internal party procedures. The minority keeps its papers closed on this and does not rule out the possibility of withdrawing its own candidacy. “Everything is open,” they say.
