What is known about floods that killed thousands of people in Libya

Emergency teams are working to find survivors and recover bodies after a huge flood hit northeastern Libya three days ago, killing more than 6,000 people and leaving 10,000 missing.

Images shared on social media showed the devastation following the floods, with collapsed roofs and cars overturned amid the rubble of destroyed infrastructure.

Satellite images showed buildings in the coastal city of Derna, hardest hit by the floods, destroyed by water and sand. The city’s shores appeared to have been severely eroded.

More than 6,000 people had died as of Wednesday morning, according to Saadeddin Abdul Wakil, undersecretary of the Ministry of Health of the Unity Government in Tripoli, one of two rival governments operating in the country.

Local rescue teams continue to search for the missing, according to state media. More than 30,000 people were displaced, the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported in Libya also this Wednesday.

Relatives of those still missing told CNN who are terrified. Others who learned of their families’ tragic fate are devastated.

A resident of the eastern city of Tobruk told CNN that eight of his family members died in the floods in Derna.

“My wife Areej’s sister and her husband passed away. Her entire family is also dead. A total of eight people died,” Emad Milad told CNN . “It’s a disaster. We are praying for better things,” said Milad.

A CNN was unable to independently verify the number of dead or missing.
