The couple Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, employees of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, the capital of the United States, were killed in an attack on Wednesday night (21), leaving an event at the Jewish Museum of the capital.
The suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez, 30, from the city of Chicago, was arrested for security upon entering the museum after the crime.
Upon being handcuffed, Rodriguez shouted “Palestine Free”.
The Ambassador of Israel in the US, Yechiel Leiter, reported that the couple was about to get engaged.
“A young man bought a ring this week with the intention of proposing his girlfriend next week in Jerusalem. They formed a beautiful couple,” he said.
First calls to the police
At around 9:08 pm (local time), police received “several calls” for a shooting, according to Pamela A. Smith, head of the Metropolitan Police Department.
“The police found an unconscious man and adult woman without breathing in the place.”
Firefighters and medical emergency service Washington responded and, despite their efforts to save lives, “both victims could not resist the injuries,” Smith explained.
The police chief reported that the suspect was seen walking from side to side outside the museum before the crime.
The attack
The suspect approached a group of four and attacked with a firearm. Both victims were a couple about to get engaged, said the Israeli ambassador in the US.
Arrested
After attacking, the shooter entered the museum, being detained for the safety of the event. Once handcuffed, he informed security where he had ruled out the gun, which was recovered by the authorities.
The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, was not known to the police. Authorities believe he was the only shooter and that there is no active threat.
