What is known about the case of the German consul arrested on suspicion of killing her husband

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro investigates the circumstances of the death of the husband of the German consul Uwe Herbert Hahn in the apartment where the couple lived, in the Ipanema neighborhood. According to the delegate responsible for the case, Camila Lourenço, there is no doubt about the authorship of the crime.

Walter Henry Maximillen Biot , 52 years old, was found dead on Friday night (5) in the penthouse where he lived. Military police and firefighters were initially called to help a victim of sudden illness.

According to information from the director of the General Police Department of the Capital, Antenor Lopes on the day of her death, the consul claimed that her husband had suffered a fall and hit his head.

Noting that the Belgian’s body had multiple injuries, the police officers approached Herbert Hahn at the Medico-Legal Institute when he would release her husband’s body and identified contradictions in his version, ordering his arrest in flagrante delicto.

The consul, detained at the José Frederico Marques prison, in Benfica, in the north of Rio, underwent a custody hearing last Sunday (7) and had his arrest converted into preventive, by order of Judge Rafael de Almeida Rezende, of the Central de Custody Hearing in Benfica.

The diplomat’s defense asked for the release of the arrest, claiming that he has consular immunity, but the Justice understood that the benefit does not apply to the case, as it is an episode outside the consular environment and without any relation to the functions performed by Uwe. Hahn.

In addition, the judge understood that it is important to keep the consul in prison, in order to avoid jeopardizing the collection of evidence and to ensure that there is no escape.

deposition of the consul

According to information provided by Uwe Hahn to the police, her relationship with Henri Biot was 23 years old. Four years ago, the couple lived in Brazil.

The diplomat said that, in May of this year, he learned that he had to move to Haiti because of his work. His report is that the husband was happy with the news until about a month ago, when he started to consume alcohol in excess and sleeping pills due to stress with the organization of the move.

Hahn said that on the day of her death, last Friday (5), her husband had a sudden outbreak while the two were on the couch. Biot would have, according to the consul, ran towards the balcony, where he fell to the ground.

“I can’t tell you the reason for this reaction. I can tell you that in the last couple of days he’s had a couple of panic attacks. He was nervous. Sometimes he was acting different”, he told the delegate responsible for the case, Camila Lourenço.

The version, however, differs from what the victim’s autopsy report attests. According to the document, there were several injuries on the victim’s body resulting from blunt action, one of them being compatible with bruising and the other with the use of a cylindrical instrument (supposedly a wooden stick).

In addition, on-site expertise detected blood stains on the property, notably in the couple’s bedroom and bathroom, compatible with the dynamics of violent death”, points out the expert in the report.

Crime scene

According to delegate Lourenço, the apartment where Biot was found dead was very dirty, with feces and blood scattered throughout the rooms.

“There was a sofa with the side with a damp stain suggesting as if someone had hastily cleaned the area in an attempt to hide something. In a second moment, a research was carried out with the luminol reagent. The experts identified blood on the pillowcase, on the floor, in various parts of the property, and in the bathroom”, he detailed.

In a statement to the police, the consul’s secretary said that she had washed a bloodstain from the apartment. According to the deposition, to which the CNN had access, the 50-year-old Brazilian said that Hahn texted her in the early hours of Saturday, saying “Walter is dead. He had a heart attack.”

The employee would have gone to the scene on Saturday morning, when Hahn told her that the victim began to feel sick, ran towards the balcony and fell. The woman said that, at that moment, she noticed that the dog was licking a stain of blood. She then grabbed a bucket and detergent and did a superficial cleaning of the area.

Investigation

Although she stated that there is no doubt about the consul’s responsibility for her husband’s death, delegate Camila Lourenço continues to investigate the case. According to her, one of the goals at this time is to obtain more information about the couple’s relationship to contextualize what happened.

“It is necessary to analyze the couple’s history, the background, to know if there was a case of domestic violence, if the victim was assaulted, hence the need to hear witnesses. These are circumstances that will interfere with the dosimetry of the penalty. We will refine the investigation to ascertain the circumstances”, said the delegate.

The data obtained by the forensics indicate that the Belgian Walter Biot was killed by a beating and his body showed marks of recent and old aggressions – from at least two days before.

At the scene, police seized a baton and an air conditioning hose that may have been used for the beating.

This Monday (8), the delegate heard the day laborer who took care of the couple’s apartment and a family friend.

Investigators are still waiting for the consul’s and the victim’s cell phones to be breached in order to analyze the contents of the devices.

wanted by CNN , the German Embassy in Brasilia informed that, together with the Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro, it is in close contact with the Brazilian authorities, but that it will not provide details about the case or the consul. THE CNN tries to contact the diplomat’s defense team, but, until the publication of this article, he has not received a response.
