What is known about the plane crash in South Korea

At least 177 people died in a plane crash in South Korea on Saturday (28), according to local fire and rescue authorities. See what is known about the case:

Worst plane crash in decades

This is the country’s worst air disaster in decades. Two people survived, both crew members, while two people are missing.

Who was on the plane

The Jeju Air plane was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members when it crash-landed at Muan County Airport. Everyone on board was South Korean except for two Thai citizens.

What was the aircraft?

The plane, listed as a Boeing 737-800 on FlightAware, traveled from Bangkok, Thailand. Analysts say both the Boeing 787-800 and Jeju Air, South Korea’s largest low-cost airline, have a strong safety record.

Black box and distress call

Both black boxes from the South Korean plane that crashed at Muan International Airport have been recovered, including flight data and voice recordings.

The images showed the aircraft sliding down the runway before catching fire. Local firefighters and aviation experts say there is likely some type of defect in the landing gear. The pilot also made a distress call shortly after the control tower warned of birds in the area.

What happens now

The investigation into what caused the plane to crash could take years, according to South Korean authorities. Investigations into commercial flights can take between six months and three years.

Considering that the plane was manufactured outside of South Korea, investigators will have to consult with the manufacturers of the aircraft’s main parts, which could mean the investigation takes a long time.
