What is more profitable, an electric car or a gasoline car? Tesla compares the cost of ownership of Model 3, Toyota Camry and BMW 3 Series

Tesla has published an interesting comparison of the cost of owning an EV versus a conventional ICE car. The $ 39,490 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus was taken as a benchmark, while its opponents were the Toyota Camry and BMW 3 Series. The cost of maintenance, insurance, the initial price of the car and, of course, the price of fuel were taken into account.

It turned out that the most economical option is … Toyota Camry! In 5 years, or 60,000 miles (almost 100,000 kilometers), the cost per mile (1.6 km) will be 50 cents. In second place – Model 3: 1 mile to the owner of an electric car will cost 55 cents. With this comparison, the company wanted to show that, despite the higher initial cost, as it is owned, an electric car allows significant savings, since it requires minimal maintenance and runs on much cheaper energy. After running 60,000 miles, one mile will cost about the same for Model 3 and Toyota Camry owners, and as use progresses, one mile for Model 3 will get cheaper. But if we consider the agreed 5-year period, then the Camry is more profitable.

BMW is an obvious outsider here – within 5 years of ownership, 1 mile will cost the owner of the German premium brand more than 80 cents. Moreover, in terms of fuel consumption, Toyota and BMW do not differ much, but BMW is more expensive initially, and maintenance of this car is more expensive.
