Jihadists and rebel groups in northern Syria have launched their biggest attack in years against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, seizing “large parts” of Aleppo in just days. On Wednesday the jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a coalition of groups dominated by al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, and Turkish-backed rebels attacked areas controlled by the Syrian army in Aleppo province and the neighboring province Idlib. Three days were enough for them to conquer dozens of villages and mainly “most” of Aleppo’s districts, government buildings and prisons, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The clashes have killed at least 311 people – 183 fighters from HTS and its allies, 100 soldiers and members of pro-government groups and 28 civilians, the non-governmental organization said.
