What is the heat wave that will affect southern Brazil?

A new heat wave that hits Argentina has advanced to the south of Brazil, raising temperatures in the region. Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul are expected to face extreme heat in the coming days.

Temperatures are expected to rise 3°C to 5°C above normal for this time of year and for a period of more than 5 days. Restricted to the South, the wave is not expected to advance to other regions of the country.

Until Saturday (10), thermometers should remain at high levels, mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, where some cities already reach almost 40°C, according to Climatempo.

A heat wave occurs when temperatures remain 5°C above average, for at least five consecutive days. In an interview with CNN , Willians Bini, meteorologist head of communications at ClimaTempo, remembers that we still have the El Niño phenomenon active, and with strong intensity, and one of the consequences of the phenomenon is to keep the atmosphere warmer. This explains why temperatures are high in Brazil and around the world, when the phenomenon began to act.

The instability should be concentrated in the central region of Brazil, that is, it does not reach the south of the country and Argentina. “Added to this, as there are no cold fronts forecast in the coming days, the atmosphere will have all the elements to stay warm”, says the meteorologist.

In Porto Alegre (RS), there is the possibility of successive records during Carnival days. For Friday (9), Climatempo predicts a maximum temperature of 36°C. On Carnival Saturday, the temperature can reach 37°C and on Sunday, 38°C. The current heat record is 36.5 C on the day (14) by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

The Civil Defense of Santa Catarina warns that maximum temperatures should reach 36°C and 38°C in the Greater West of Santa Catarina, and could reach 40°C in areas close to the border with RS and the border with Argentina.

The forecast is that in Vale do Itajaí the heat will also be quite intense, with highs of 38°C on Tuesday (7) and Wednesday (8), and for the rest of the week, highs should be close to 35° W.

The Argentine National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued an alert for intense heat, felt in ten cities in the center and north of the country. Temperatures exceeded 40 °C on Friday (2).

In Las Lomitas, thermometers reached 41.0°C, in the province of Formosa, 40.2°C in Presidente Roque Sáenz Penã, in the province of Chaco) and 39.2°C, in Santiago Del Estero, but in the same province . For Willians Bini, the wave will only cease with a new cold front, which will reduce this heat.
