What is the mortality rate from delta covid, who dies, the effectiveness of vaccines: data from Britain

Against the background of mass vaccinations in Britain, people under 50 have the chance of dying from the delta strain of the coronavirus (formerly called “Indian”) has dropped to 0.0097%. Writes about this in Twitter Public Health England virologist Meegan Kell, citing a new report from that health organization.

“Okay, and before someone writes:” Why do I need your vaccine, if there is such a scanty chance of dying from the corona? “, I will say: it is super important to remember that we have coverage with one dose of vaccine in the group of 18-50 years – about 50 %. In this figure of the risk of dying, protection after vaccination is already “sewn”. It was she who prevented death, “the expert explained.

According to PHE, from February 1 to June 21, 92,056 delta cases of the disease (92% of all cases during the reporting period) were recorded in the country, 117 of them ended in death.

Among people under 50 who received the full course of vaccines, no one died from the Δ strain. In this age group, there were only 8 deaths from it, with 6 victims not being vaccinated. 93% of deaths from Δ-covid were in the group of 50 years or more.

See how dramatically the Δ strain began to dominate the population over others, including the alpha strain, which is responsible for most of the deaths in the fall / winter outbreak before the country was vaccinated:

However, the number of cases of Δ-disease in the age group “50 and above” is low – only 10% of all cases: due to the fact that the country first of all vaccinated the vulnerable – the elderly.

“The low incidence rates in the 50+ group make it clear that vaccines prevent infection and save lives. If it were not for the vaccines, there would be many more deaths,” writes the virologist.

On the one hand, Kell notes, vaccines are very effective at protecting against delta hospitalization. On the other hand, there is a two-fold risk of hospitalization with this strain compared to “alpha” – even after taking into account the vaccination status.

In the country, first of all, they vaccinate with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, in second place in the number of doses – Pfizer-BioNTech, in third – Moderna. As of June 16, 24.5 million first doses of Astrazeneka and 16.8 million first doses of Pfizer have been administered in Britain. On that date, 19.6 million Britons received the second dose of Astrazeneka, 10.9 million of Pfizer. Another 730,000 people received the first dose of Modernism.

Without dividing the varieties of vaccines, PHE writes that they save from symptomatic Δ-covid with an efficiency of 35% after one dose and 79% after the second.

As for protection from hospitalization with Δ-covid, vaccines prevent it by 80% after one dose and 96% after the second.

Online antivaccinators manipulate the fact that the number of deaths from “delta” per number of cases is relatively scanty, comparing this figure with the original strain and “alpha”. At the same time, they deliberately do not indicate that earlier in the country there was either no vaccination at all, or just started.
