There is no need to restore relations with France and Germany, the Prime Minister assured today (2/6) Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, saying that “there is a good dialogue” with the European allies, after the revelations on US espionage via the Nordic submarine cables.
In her first public statement on the matter, following the publication of the relevant information in the press on Sunday night, the head of the Danish government declined to comment immediately.
But as a general principle, “there should be no systematic monitoring of the allies,” Mete Frederiksen told reporters on the sidelines of a parliamentary session.
According to a survey by the Danish state television network Danmarks Radio (DR), published on Sunday night, along with various European media, Washington used at least until 2014 the Danish submarine network to monitor the personalities of four countries(Germany, Sweden, Norway, France), including Angela Merkel.
Paris, Berlin and other European capitals called on the United States and Denmark on Monday to comment on the allegations.
Asked about this discomfort, Fredericksen tried to downplay it.
“We have a good dialogue,” the head of the Danish government told reporters.
“I do not think it is right to say that we need to restore relations with France or Germany. “We have an ongoing dialogue, also in the field of intelligence services,” he said.
