The NASA space agency shared some very interesting information a few days ago about how astronauts are being prepared for the upcoming landing on the moon. It turned out that for this purpose, experts use a pool with specific lighting conditions, which was equipped for multiple tests at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center.
“We prepare our astronauts for the moon landing by subjecting them to training conditions that mimic gravity 1/6 [гравитация на Луне в шесть раз слабее, чем на Земле], conditions of limited mobility, low lighting and special terrain. At this training stage, it is extremely important for astronauts to get used to working not only with low gravity, because astronauts have previously been trained for spacewalks in pools, but also with rather specific lighting conditions. The fact is that the Artemis mission to land on the moon involves the work of an astronaut at the South Pole of the Earth’s satellite, when the Sun is only a few degrees above the horizon. Accordingly, the sun’s rays will cast long shadows that make it difficult to perform certain tasks. In order for the mission participants to become accustomed to such conditions, the test pool was significantly upgraded.
NASA experts turned off the normal lighting in the laboratory, hung black curtains on the walls of the pool to minimize underwater reflections, and then installed sufficiently powerful underwater lamps. It is they who imitate the rays of the Sun, casting long shadows from various stones and sand at the bottom of the pool. This scenario is as close as possible to the real conditions of work on the Moon, so that the participants of the Artemis mission will be well prepared for the implementation of the assigned tasks.
