While discussions about reaching an agreement on the Ukrainian are ongoing and a new meeting is being prepared between the two sides – perhaps in the Vatican – Guardian attempts to clarify exactly what Vladimir Putin is asking for from Kiev and what are the “embankments” in the negotiations. One of the few peaceful proposals that have been made public comes – according to Reuters reports – from the US. According to this, Russia is calling on Ukraine to formally recognize the annexation of Crimea by Russia and to informally accept the Russian occupation of large sections of the eastern regions of the country. On Monday, Zelenski confirmed that Russia was asking Ukrainian troops to leave five regions as a prerequisite not for peace, but simply for ceasefire and launching negotiations.
