What should we expect from New York Fashion Week?

After the return of Haute Couture to Paris, with a significant percentage of real rather than virtual events, the Ready To Wear shows are also preparing for their great return – above all – in attendance, starting from New York: from 8 to 12 September in fact, the collections will be unveiled Spring / Summer 2022 of designers, from fashion milestones to new talents, in different locations of the Big Apple, from the Empire State Building to Gotham Hall, passing through the inevitable Spring Studios.

The ferment is there and makes itself felt, but not by chance: this is in fact there first time New York Fashion Week will largely take place in attendance since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, 18 months ago. But, apart from the ways in which the shows will take place, what are the novelties of this edition?

As always – and in greater numbers, given the greater opening following the mass vaccinations – we expect many celebrity sightings in the front row and sensational street style during the events on the calendar, which count as many as 91 fashion shows and presentations. While numerous designers return to the catwalk with live guests, some have opted for one again digital shows, including Raisavanessa, Maison Atia and Ulla Johnson, a brand that opens this fashion week. To follow, the highly anticipated fashion shows of Carolina Herrera, Brandon Maxwell, Veronica Beard, Coach, Anna Sui, Rebecca Minkoff e Jeremy Scott, who will return to New York Fashion Week with Moschino, along with Thom Browne e Rodarte. In addition, for the first time we find many new names on the calendar, among which the long-awaited one stands out Peter Do’s catwalk debut. Big absent instead, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Pyer Moss and Marc Jacobs, who chose to present his Spring / Summer 2022 collection in June.

Although most of the presentations will be live, the number of guests, as we could imagine, has been significantly reduced. Furthermore, those who will participate must provide their health data: IMG will require proof of the vaccine, both to guests and to models, make-up artists, hair stylists and anyone else who works backstage. In addition, the organization warmly invited guests to wear masks inside, reserving the option to apply more stringent measures if necessary, given the current spread of the Delta variant.

Event management in times of a pandemic, however, is just one of the challenges that the CFDA and IMG, the co-hosts of New York Fashion Week, face this year, from the decline of retail and mainstream fashion media. to the struggles of emerging designers to promote sustainability more and more. Questions to which, in all probability, we will find some answers right on the catwalk. Last, big news of this edition, is the closing of the fashion week with the Met Gala 2021, rescheduled from May, with the inauguration of the exhibition America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Costume Institute. Here is the calendar of the New York Fashion Week shows, available in streaming on NYFW.com.
