The history of the Sanctuary

According to information from the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, it all began in 1904, the date of the fiftieth anniversary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which arrived at Morro da Conceição through an image of the saint from France. At the time, Bishop D. Luís Raimundo Brito ordered the construction of a chapel on the hill, in the Gothic style, which was inaugurated in 1906.

Due to the urbanization of the city, there were changes to create the new Parish of Our Lady of Conception. The following year, the parish was renamed Matriz do Morro da Conceição. Years later, after renovations, the church adopted a modern style and glass walls, allowing devotees to view the image of the Immaculate both from inside and outside the temple.

In 2015, the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Dom Fernando Saburido, elevated the Parish of Morro da Conceição to the status of Sanctuary. The capital of Pernambuco has devotion to the Immaculate Conception as one of its traditions. The pilgrimage culture of pilgrims to the top of the hill is an event that takes place throughout the year.
