What We Know About the Trump Assassination Attempt 5 Days After the Shooting

It’s been five days since a 20-year-old man attempted to assassinate former US President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting at the rally, which left Trump and two others injured and one person dead.

A source familiar with the matter said the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, wrote on the popular gaming platform Steam: “July 13th will be my debut, see how this plays out.”

Meanwhile, the Secret Service is under intense scrutiny as the shooter managed to climb onto a roof and gain access to a clear line of sight to Trump during the rally.

A group of Republican senators chased U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle through the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, shouting at her for refusing to answer questions about the assassination attempt.

Here’s what we know about the shooting so far

About the shooter

Crooks lived in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park, about 35 miles south of the Trump rally.

The gun Crooks used in the shooting was an AR-style weapon, according to the FBI.

Photos of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were on the shooter’s phone, according to three US officials.

The search history on Crooks’ devices included the date of the Democratic National Convention and Trump events, the sources said. Authorities said investigators were not sure what the searches meant.

The latest on the investigations

The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general has opened an investigation into the Secret Service’s decision-making.

The House will establish a “task force,” Speaker Mike Johnson said.

In her first public statement since the assassination attempt, the Secret Service director said Monday that the agency will “fully participate” in an independent review ordered by President Joe Biden and also said the agency will work with Congress on “any oversight action.”

Meanwhile, at the Republican Convention

Trump will formally accept the GOP nomination for president tonight and address the convention, where he appeared with a bandage on his injured ear this week.
