What will be Prince Charles’ official name now?

The new monarch of Britain, known to this day as prince charles, will now be called “King Charles III”, as announced today from his former official residence, Clarence House.

The 73-year-old Charles automatically became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II died this afternoon at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Meanwhile, Charles’ wife – until now known as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall – will share his social status as ‘royal wife’.

“The death of my dearly beloved mother, the Queen, is a moment of supreme sorrow for me,” said Britain’s King Charles III in his first remarks since Elizabeth II’s death.

“Her loss will be deeply felt across the country, the commonwealth and by countless people,” said Elizabeth II’s eldest son, who is in line to the British throne.

He added that both he and his family are relieved by the respect and affection his mother enjoyed throughout her reign.
