What will be the next AMD monster. New Rumor About GPU Navi 31 Indicates No Compute Units

More details have surfaced on the Web about the Navi 31 GPU, which should be AMD’s first multi-chip gaming GPU and likely the first of its kind in the gaming market as a whole.

The information comes from the old-timers of the Beyond3D forum, so you should treat it with caution or just as with rumor. But it is worthy of attention.

So, the source claims that the RDNA3 architecture will lose the Compute Unit (CU) that has been an integral part of AMD architectures for many years. Instead, the main large unit will be the WGP (Workgroup Processor) unit.

What will be the next AMD monster. New Rumor About GPU Navi 31 Indicates No Compute Units

WGP blocks debuted on the RDNA architecture, effectively combining two CUs. At the same time, the WGP block is not architecturally allocated in any way, because it does not have any elements of its own – only two separate CUs. However, the logic of the architecture is such that WGP can operate as a single logical unit, which allows access to double the number of ALUs and double the register file, as well as up to four times the memory bandwidth for the cache.

How the situation with RDNA3 will change is not yet clear. Perhaps the CUs will disappear only nominally, that is, there will be no real changes in the architecture at this scale. It is also possible that the WGP module will receive some changes, due to which it will no longer be possible to divide it into two equivalent blocks.

In any case, with this configuration, Navi 31 will receive two crystals with 30 WGP modules each, and each module, in turn, will contain 256 stream processors, which is double that of RDNA2.
