What would the security guarantees mean in practice – what Ukraine wants, the potential choices and the attitude of Russia

Following historical meetings at the White House this week, President Volodimir Zelenski said Ukraine and its allies “are already working on the specific content of security guarantees”. But what do “security guarantees” mean in practice? The spectrum is wide, from the much -talked -about troops to the ground, to the threat of overwhelming economic sanctions on Russian oil exports. What Ukraine wants the British BBC analysis refers to “what Ukraine wants, but it is not going to get, at least not in the near future, and this is NATO accession.” US President Donald Trump has blocked it, but there are many other NATO members who are also silently opposed, such as Slovakia, mainly on the grounds that this would dramatically increase the chances of the transatlantic alliance being involved in a war with Russia.
