With fine € 225 million was fined WhatsApp by the Irish Data Protection Authority for breach of EU Privacy Policy (GDPR).
According to his post BBC, is the largest fine ever imposed by the Irish Data Protection Commission and the second highest under EU GDPR rules.
Facebook, which owns Whatsapp, is headquartered in Ireland and the Irish regulator is the leading authority on the tech giant in Europe. Whatsapp stated that it disagrees with the decision and the seriousness of the fine and plans to file an appeal.
The fine is related to a survey launched in 2018, on whether WhatsApp had transparent procedures on how it manages information.
The problems that arose were highly technical, including whether WhatsApp provided enough information to users about how their data was processed and whether its privacy policies were fairly clear. These policies have been updated several times since then.
“WhatsApp is committed to providing a secure and private environment,” said a company spokesman. “We have worked to ensure that the information we provide is transparent and comprehensible, and we will continue to do so. “We disagree with today’s decision regarding the transparency we provided to the people in 2018 and the sanctions are completely disproportionate,” he added.
