WhatsApp, what happens from May 15th

May 15th WhatsApp will modify its conditions of use, in particular relating to privacy. At the beginning of the year it had been discussed in depth, complete with boycotts and mass abandonments of the chat sponsored by well-known personalities and celebrities. There was, in fact, a discreet jolt for alternative platforms such as Telegram and Signal considered safer. From 8 February, the date initially established for the updating of the terms of use, Menlo Park scaled to 15 May: a useful move to defuse the doubts raised by the Privacy Guarantor and by users.

And to better explain what the changes will be used on which he asked us for consent with a pop-up notice. Accepting them is essential in order to continue using the platform.

But what is the update that will come into effect from mid-May? It’s about the user communication with companies, large and small, who use the chat to stay in touch with customers, finalize orders and payments, take reservations and so on. In order to streamline this communication, companies “could use Facebook as a technology service provider for managing some responses on their behalf. We clearly label chats so you always know when this happens. ‘ Basically, explains WhatsApp, there must be a necessary exchange of data and information between the two platforms including sharing of data such as telephone number, transactions, information relating to services and methods of interaction with other users. More than what already happens. And users need to accept these changes.

But what will happen if we don’t accept? Simple: the chat, used by over two billion users, it will no longer be available in its essential features. In short, no messages, only phone calls and notifications but for a short period. The account will not be deleted automatically: will remain frozen pending approval of the update. If this does not happen, WhatsApp reminds in a note on the official blog that users will be able to delete the account and migrate elsewhere so as not to have to accept them: “Before May 15, you can export your chat history to Android or iPhone and download your account report – they explain on the official website – if you want to delete your account on Android, iPhone or KaiOS, we invite you to think about it because this action it is not reversible, as it involves deleting the message history, deleting your WhatsApp backups and removing you from all your WhatsApp groups ». If you need assistance with this deletion and migration operation, WhatsApp has also made available a support page.

If instead of WhatsApp you really can’t do without, all that remains is to give your consent to the update to thenotice it will pop up while we use the app. Without the green light, the platform will not be blocked but we will go very close to it, since it will in fact be useless.
