When will the metro construction site be set up in Exarchia

By Eleni Botas

With the completion of the relevant topographic studies but without having yet installed the construction site at the Exarcheia station and delays at the “Veikou” Well (due to the relocation of utility networks), the works for the preliminary works of Metro Line 4 (Veikos grove section) continue. – Mortar).

For the station in Exarchia, the reactions from a portion of the locals have delayed the installation of the construction site, with the government insisting, however, that it will not back down in its construction.

Regarding the location of the station in another part of the area and not in the square of Exarcheia, sources close to the Attiko Metro emphasize that the location has been done since 2017 and such a change can not be made. Also, this possibility would lead to the cancellation of the project contract.

Therefore, information indicates that the installation of the construction site in Exarcheion Square is expected within the summer.

Regarding the reactions for the construction of the station on Exarcheion Square, talking about a change in the physiognomy of the area, executives involved in the implementation of the project cite as a typical example the case of Agia Paraskevi, where the request for construction of a station has returned. Metro in the central square of the city, with the relevant resolution being put to a vote in the municipal council.

When line 3 was constructed, the station was originally planned to take place in the central square of Agia Paraskevi with the line moving below Mesogeion Avenue, having as terminal the area of Stavros instead of Doukissis Plakentias.

This plan, however, met with strong reactions from the local community, with the municipality requesting the relocation of the station outside the city center so as not to further burden the traffic on the streets. Eventually, the station, which opened years late, was moved to a sparsely populated area, about a kilometer away. Today, realizing the advantages, the issue of building a new metro station on the central square, returns.

It is noted that the first section of Line 4 of the Metro “Alsos Veikou – Goudi”, has been designed to serve many densely populated areas in the center of Athens.

With the construction of four new stations (Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Evangelismos), existing central Metro stations will be decongested due to the ever-increasing demand of the passenger public and especially the station of Syntagma and Evangelismos.

Line 4, among others, will serve many important buildings and facilities, such as hospitals, the Courts, the National Technical University of Athens, the National Archaeological Museum, the Ministry of Culture, the Law School of EKPA, the Benaki Museum (Koumbari building), the British Council and the Campus.
