Natural from Belo Horizonte , Gaius Soter he has always had a strong connection with the cuisine of Minas Gerais, which explains his resume filled with works related to the local cuisine.
Founded in 2017 the Umami Steaks a pioneer brand in dry aging in Minas Gerais and two years later took over the restaurant’s kitchen soul chef .
From the capital of Minas Gerais, he went to Rio de Janeiro, in 2020, to participate in the second season of the reality show “Mestre do Sabor”, on TV Globo. In September of the same year and back in BH, he led the kitchen at the O Jardim restaurant.
But a significant change came in 2021: the opening of its first restaurant, the quiet , which soon caught the attention of specialized critics. At the house in the Lourdes neighborhood, the chef presents authorial cuisine, without leaving aside traditions, with an à la carte menu and tasting menu focused on vegetables, pork and chicken.
Outside of his own kitchen, the chef, who has just become the father of the charming Lina, also tries out other flavors around the city and shares them below. a selection of eclectic places to eat well in Belo Horizonte .
Lucas’ Canteen

A Lucas’ Canteen It’s a restaurant that’s been around for 60 years and is located on the ground floor of Maletta, a historic building in the center. It’s a place that was resistance from the left during the dictatorship and that’s why it’s full of stories.
The restaurant is traditional, in a very “Brazilian” style, in which the waiter serves dishes with two-spoon pliers, for example.
The house has an icon of fried foods and famous in BH, the filet surprise (R$ 192.90). It’s like a cordon bleu, with breaded and fried beef stuffed with mozzarella and ham. It’s big, to be shared by four people, with piamontese rice, french fries, fried egg and fried plantain.
In addition to the house in the center, there is also the House of Tales from the same group, which serves the filet surprise and where I sometimes go after hours.
Cantina do Lucas: Avenida Augusto de Lima, 233, Ed. Maletta – Centro, Belo Horizonte – Minas Gerais / Tel.: (31) 3243-9747 / Opening hours: Sunday to Thursday, from 11:30 am to midnight; Friday and Saturday, from 11:30 am to 2:00 am.
Ōkinaki
O Ōkinaki It’s a Japanese bar that serves well-crafted food in an unpretentious environment, without a lot of decoration and with tables on the sidewalk.
Who runs the house is the Gabriella Guimaraes and the Guilherme Furtado , who work with a lot of technique and maintain a standard of flavor. It is a place that I really like and that serves katsu sando, gyoza, bao, sushi units and rice.
Ōkinaki: Avenida Álvares Cabral, 1303 – Lourdes, Belo Horizonte – MG / Tel.: (31) 8228-8793 / Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday, from 6 pm to 11 pm; Saturday, from 12:30 pm to 11:00 pm; Sunday, from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
Dudi’s Bar
Bar do Dudi is a bar inside a grocery store. I think it’s amazing because Dudi has no structure: it has a grill, two stove tops and everything you eat there is perfect.
He cares about the ingredients and serves a croquette that is wonderful, rolled up like a party cake, all round the same and very creamy in the middle.
In addition, it has great mustards, a dark one that serves with sausage and a yellow one that serves with okra. It’s a very simple, cheap and wonderful bar to eat.
Bar do Dudi: Avenida Francisco Deslandes, 1041 – Anchieta, Belo Horizonte – MG / Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday, normally from 5 pm to 11 pm.
Xapuri Restaurant

In addition to being a wonderful place, it is the corner of traditional Minas Gerais cuisine. The house, for me, is poetry.
It is the cuisine from Minas Gerais that lives in our imagination: wood stove, tropeiro beans, stewed chicken, ribs, cheese bread with sausage, pork rinds. Everything is perfect.
I always say that if you have only one meal available on your agenda in Belo Horizonte: go to xapuri .
Xapuri: Rua Mandacarú, 260 – Loja 1 – Trevo, Belo Horizonte – MG / Tel.: (31) 3496-6198 / Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 10 pm; Sunday, from 11 am to 5 pm.
Taberna Baltazar
O Taberna Baltazar It’s a very nice Portuguese restaurant. It’s very traditional and serves a sardine that is the most amazing thing in the world. I also recommend the wonderful codfish cake.
Taberna Baltazar: Rua Oriente, 571 – Serra, Belo Horizonte – MG / Tel.: (31) 7145-7597 and (31) 3223-7908 / Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday, from 4 pm to midnight; Saturday, from 11:30 am to 11:00 pm; Sunday, from 11:30 am to 6:00 pm.
Bar do Toninho
I also don’t stop going Bar do Toninho , which serves amazing Arabic food. The Arab delicacies here are beautiful, such as the meat sfiha, the kibbeh (raw, cooked and fried) and the tasty broths.
Like a good bar, it has beer and spirits to go with the food.
Bar do Toninho: Rua Níquel, 246 – Serra, Belo Horizonte – MG / Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday, from 5 pm to 10 pm, and on Saturdays.
Lab Folder
O Past Lab it’s small, a little door near Savassi. The menu has a selection of starters ranging from burratas, raw meat and even oysters from Santa Catarina. Pastas are diverse, both in preparation and in type; there are also gnocchi and sweet classics from an Italian restaurant – tiramisù and tartufo nero, for example.
Pasta Lab: Rua Fernandes Tourinho, 235 – Employees, Belo Horizonte – MG / Phone: (31) 97234-6461 / Opening hours: Wednesday to Friday, from 12:00 to 14:30 and from 19:00 to 22:30; Saturday, from 12:00 to 16:00 and from 19:00 to 22:30; Sunday, from 12:00 to 16:00.
