Where does our ice cream come from? These are the largest ice cream producers in the EU

Germany, France and Italy are the largest producers ice cream in the EU, according to Eurostat data released today.

Specifically, in 2020, the EU produced more than 2.9 billion liters of ice cream, representing a decrease of 9% from the previous year. During the same period, EU Member States exported 232 million kilograms of ice cream to non-EU countries, worth a total of 752 million euros. In addition, ice cream imports from non-EU countries amounted to 79 million kilos, worth a total of 182 million euros. While the volume of ice cream imports outside the EU decreased (-4%) compared to 2019, exports increased by 5%.

Among EU member states, Germany was the main producer of ice cream in 2020, producing 642 million liters of ice cream. It was followed by France (2019 data: 516 million liters) and Italy (509 million liters).

According to Eurostat, Germany is not only the main producer of ice cream in the EU, but also the producer of the cheapest ice cream, at 1.3 euros per liter. France reported the highest price at 2.2 euros per liter of ice cream (2019 data), followed by Italy with an average price of 2 euros per liter of ice cream.

However, the largest exporter of ice cream outside the EU is France, which in 2020 exported 59 million kg of ice cream, accounting for 25% of non-EU exports. It is followed by the Netherlands with exports of 38 million kg of ice cream (16% of total EU exports), Germany with exports of 29 million kg or 13%, Italy with 20 million kg or 9% and Belgium with 16 million kg or 7%.
