Where is Erdogan going at the NATO Summit – Athens ready for answers, with ‘gun’ International Law

By Dimitris Gatsios

“I will continue to defend the Greek positions with calm confidence. I will do it in every international forum I am in, whether it is the European Union, NATO or my bilateral contacts. Not in the mood to target Turkey. and point the finger at anyone, but explain why in this difficult time for Europe it would be a big problem for Europe, for NATO, for the United States, to have another source of uncertainty and instability in its south-eastern wing. NATO “.

Having given the stigma of his intentions, in the face of the revisionist verbalisms of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish officials, the Prime Minister, on his return from Nicosia and his extended talks with President Anastasiadis, is preparing for the next informing partners and allies about Ankara’s delinquency. Athens is circling four dates in the diplomatic calendar of the internationalization of Turkish demilitarization, betting on this new demarcation in its strong positions, in International Law and in its enhanced geopolitical, energy and economic role in the region. The first stop of the diplomatic counter-attack of the Greek capital will be the meeting of Mr. Mitsotakis with his Italian counterpart, Mario Draghi, in Rome next Wednesday. A few hours before the curtain rises on the European Council, which will have a highly geopolitical imprint, Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. Draghi will discuss, as expected, the developments in Ukraine and the ongoing energy crisis. However, it is considered certain that the prime minister will bring the issue of Turkey to the table, informing the Italian prime minister about the new source of tension in the Aegean. They will follow:

– The Summit of the “27” leaders of the European Union in Brussels, on June 23 and 24, during which the Prime Minister will put even more emphatically in his counterparts the delinquency of Ankara, with the main goal of Athens being none other than condemning Turkey, through a clear reference to the Text of the Conclusions.

– The NATO Summit in Madrid on 29 and 30 June.

– Mr Mitsotakis’ speech to the European Parliament on 5 July.

Focusing on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the prime minister found another opportunity to address his neighbor’s neo-Ottoman revision from the podium of the Democratic Alarm conference. “This is an open attack on the existing borders. And it is enough for every citizen everywhere in the world to make a simple simulation of what is happening in Ukraine in the data of his own country. And then he will realize that this is not a simple issue of international news. but for a dangerous development with a reflection in his own life, because he threatens to establish a model of authoritarian behavior, according to which every imperialist country, every local unrest, under any pretext, will invade a neighboring country. “Other leaders imitate it with imperial and expansionist visions, something that concerns Greece, but even more concerns Cyprus, which has been mutilated for so many decades”, was his characteristic disgust.

True to the path of outbreaks, which negatively ionize the climate in the wider region, Turkey is escalating the tension. As the pro-government newspaper “Sabah” reported on its front page, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will denounce Greece for the militarization of the islands at the forthcoming NATO Summit, openly choosing to pull the strings of provocations. In this context, the Greek capital is strengthening, at a steady pace, its alliances. Mr. Dendias had lunch at a restaurant in Athens to his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Soukri, with whom he traveled to Luxembourg, in order to give the “present” to the 9th EU-Egypt Association Council. The Greek Foreign Minister will also participate in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council, which will also take place in Luxembourg, during which he is expected to inform about the continuing escalation of Turkish delinquency and provocation. All this, at a time when the signals of determination and readiness of our country in the face of any threat are still present. “This summer we have to be more vigilant than ever. The provocative threats from the leadership of neighboring Turkey can not find the slightest response, obviously to anyone in Greece but also to anyone in the world. We are ready, we are determined, we defend the “Our borders, the Greek Police do their job in an excellent way in Evros and wherever else it is called”, noted the Minister of Citizen Protection. “I want to ask you all to be extremely vigilant, it is a period of time where not the slightest weakness and the slightest delay in the performance of duty is allowed. we need to and we are called to respond “, said Mr. Theodorikakos, speaking at the celebration of” Day in honor of the Apostates “.
