The Omicron variant has been reported in 89 countries and the number of cases has doubled in 1.5 to three days in areas where there is transmission in the community, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today.
The Omicron variant is spreading rapidly in countries with high levels of population immunity, but it is unclear whether this is due to the virus’s ability to evade immune protection, its inherently increased transmissibility or a combination of the two, the WHO said in a statement.
On November 26, shortly after its location, the WHO described Omicron as a variant of concern and many other things about it remain unknown, including the severity of the disease it causes.
“There is still limited data on the clinical severity of Omicron. More data is needed to understand the severity profile and how it is affected by vaccination and pre-existing immunity,” the WHO said.
The agency warns that with the number of cases rising so rapidly in some areas, hospitals are at risk of overcrowding.
“Hospitalizations in the UK and South Africa continue to rise and given the growing incidence, many health systems are likely to be overloaded soon,” it said.
