WHERE: Only 27% of health professionals in Africa are fully vaccinated

Only 27% of health professionals, or one in four, have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in Africa, the World Health Organization said today.

The situation “leaves most front-line staff vulnerable to the pandemic,” the World Health Organization’s γραφείο Africa regional office warned in a press release following its weekly digital press conference.

“The majority of health workers in Africa have not been vaccinated and remain dangerously exposed to severe forms of the disease,” said with concern Macidisso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

According to the international organization, “it is paramount for health workers to benefit from strong vaccination coverage, not only for their own protection, but also for the protection of their patients and for health systems to continue to operate in a period of extreme need “.

“The shortage of health personnel in Africa is acute and deep,” she said, noting that 16 countries on the continent have less than one healthcare professional per 1,000 inhabitants.

“Given the resurgence of cases in Africa, which we expect after the holiday season, countries urgently need to accelerate the development of vaccines in medical personnel,” Moeti said.

“In Africa, we are gradually overcoming the problem of supplying vaccine doses. This is not the time to let distrust of vaccines stand in the way,” he said.
