Which band would you like back? Understand the wave of rock revival

If you listened to rock in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s… close your eyes and remember that song you loved to hear the most. Does the band still exist? If so, it’s great that you can go to concerts and still have that feeling of antiquity, of nostalgia, still present. It almost seems like a scene from “Inside Out 2” (contains spoilers from the movie). But, if the answer is no, the band has already broken up, what I say is… calm down!

The trend now is the return of “those who didn’t go”. We’ve already seen Titãs together on an epic tour up until this year. There was also NX Zero and Restart. On the international scene, Oasis was the big news. And Linkin Park has also announced its return, with a new singer, Emly Armstrong. It’s nostalgia knocking on the door.

If your favorite band (which one is it?) hasn’t announced a comeback yet, know that there is hope. Mine is Engenheiros do Hawaii. So you ask me: but will they come back? Not necessarily. Humberto Gessinger, the vocalist, has already announced a new tour for next year, with songs from the band and his solo work. And the other members of the trio’s golden era, Augusto Licks (guitar) and Carlos Maltz (drums), are on tour in Brazil playing the band’s greatest hits from the 80s and 90s. They will perform in São Paulo this Sunday (8), at Carioca Club, in Pinheiros (west zone).

This “separate” return, for me, is also on the list of the “returns of those who didn’t go” of our national rock. I spoke with Augusto Licks to understand this. Why, after more than 20, 30 years, do these guys pick up their instruments again, announce shows and remember their hits? I already know what’s on your mind: the answer must be money . Yes and no.

Of course, time has passed, there are bills to pay and it is important to have the financial return from a tour, especially for those who were out of the media. But I dare say that this new beginning is bigger than that. “It is seeing in the eyes of those who are at the show that feeling of going back in time, of rediscovering who you were before, what we think we lost over time”, says Licks, who came to visit me here at CNN .

When I went to pick him up at reception, I was surprised. The building’s security guard recognized him and wanted to remember the songs from that time. In the hallways of the CNN he would stop and tell stories from the 90s, like one about how he composed the beginning of “O Exército de um Homem Só”, a song from the album “O Papa é Pop”, from 1990. That guitar sound (listen to it) was inspired by a country music program on TV Cultura, which he watched when he woke up on a Sunday morning. It was “Viola, Minha Viola”, with Inezita Barroso. He saw that guitar, heard the chords, wanted to imitate it for rock… and the result was a success.

And this return to the past, in this story, is just one example of how we often want to go back to the past too. And when we do, with the bands that return, it is this good feeling that invades us. “I see people at the shows declaring the songs, singing with an emotion that comes straight from the heart. That alone is worth going back to play and gives us energy”, says Licks.

Another factor for “coming back together” is maturity. We are older, we no longer care as much about the details that, 20 years ago, made us stop everything. “When we broke up, I never imagined playing with Maltz again. But so much time has passed, so much has happened… We are indeed different, but the music that unites us today is above all that”, he says. This is also a common scenario for other members of other bands who have come back together or may come back together: money, emotion, maturity and time (which heals and alleviates many things). Who knows, maybe your favorite band will also use this recipe and get back together?
