Which new Ryzen processor should you buy for gaming? A lot of testing with four video cards gives the answer

At the moment, the Ryzen 5000 desktop processor line is the best in the market in terms of aggregate characteristics. Unfortunately, these CPUs were also in short supply, so the price-performance ratio should be discussed separately, but this is a temporary phenomenon.

Ryzen 5000 is good even where Intel solutions were previously the best, that is, in games. Despite the fact that the concept of a game processor has actually become meaningless long ago, not everyone understands and knows about it. TechSpot decided to check if something has changed with the release of Ryzen 5000 and compared all four available models in modern games using different video cards.

So, CPU Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 7 5800X, Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X, as well as video cards GeForce RTX 3090, RTX 3070, Radeon RX 5700 XT and RX 5600 XT took part in the testing. As you know, the higher the resolution, the higher the load on the video card, and the more powerful the video card, the theoretically more productive CPU it needs. What are the realities at the moment?

As you can see, even in Full HD and at medium graphics quality settings, where the processor’s influence should be maximum, there is practically no difference between the six-core Ryzen 5 5600 XT and the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950 XT, even with the GeForce RTX 3090. More precisely, it is only 4%, and with lower graphics cards it decreases and eventually disappears altogether. At higher resolutions and at higher graphics quality settings, there is no difference at all. Moreover, the result is the same even in games where the number of frames per second exceeds 500.

If you look at specific games, you can only note Cyberpunk 2077, where in Full HD with medium graphics quality settings, the difference between the junior and senior CPUs in conjunction with the RTX 3090 reaches 16%. But no one in reality will play on such a PC with such settings. At the same time, the difference completely disappears with the RTX 3070.

Thus, the situation has not changed in any way. For the vast majority of modern games, even in Full HD at maximum graphics quality settings, not to mention higher resolutions, a far from the most productive processor is enough. Of course, there are much more processor-dependent games, where the difference will be much larger, but there are very few such projects.
