The scientific director of the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Lev Zeleny confirmed that in Russia the design of the interplanetary automatic station “Venera-D”, which will be sent to Venus, has begun.

Whether there is life on Venus, whether it was there before – this remains to be seen

The executors will be NGO them. S.A. Lavochkin, which is part of the state corporation “Roscosmos”, and IKI RAS. The first mission, in 2029, involves studying the surface, atmosphere, internal structure and surrounding plasma of Venus. The second will be launched in June 2031 and will continue this research. The third mission in June 2034 is supposed to deliver samples of the atmosphere, aerosols and possibly soil from this planet to Earth.

The Soviet automatic station Venera-7 on December 15, 1970 made the first ever soft landing on the surface of Venus, where it worked for about 20 minutes and failed. Last year, a group of astronomers from Cardiff University reported the discovery of phosphine gas in the atmosphere of Venus, which is a sign of possible life. In addition, scientists have discovered the simplest amino acid glycine in the atmosphere of Venus, which can also be a sign of life.

Last week, the Perseverance rover sent back to Earth the first high-resolution panorama of the Red Planet, which was taken using the Mastcam-Z instrument.
