The streaming platform Netflix it has been producing original content in Brazil for a few years, but the Brazilian market has been gaining more and more prominence in the catalogue. In 2021, projects like Invisible City e Double father reached the Top 10 among the most watched content in non-English language streaming.
In 2022, however, Brazilians should stand out even more among new releases, with comedy starring in the new batch of content.
The cast is one of the platform’s biggest bets to attract viewers: Whindersson Nunes and GKay pull the internet audience – the first has an impressive 54.7 million followers on Instagram, and the second 15.2 million – while names like Rodrigo Sant’Anna, Fernanda Paes Leme and Leandro Hassum appeal to open television audiences. There was even space left for soap opera stars such as Vera Fischer and Rômulo Arantes Neto.
During the online event “Mais Brasil na Tela”, this Tuesday (23), Netflix announced several contents and its new formats. Whindersson Nunes will launch a new stand-up, Rodrigo Sant’Anna will lead the platform’s first Brazilian sitcom and a comedy special called I arrived. Leandro Hassum will also appear again, with the film Neighbors.
Christmas specials, not so common in Brazilian cinema, are back in the catalogue. In 2020, the debut of All right for Christmas to come it attracted 26 million viewers worldwide, and this year GKay, Sérgio Malheiros and Vera Fischer are trying to repeat their success with A Christmas full of grace.
“Comedy and humor are a universal language, they bring an authenticity behind them, it’s a popular genre. Before being the face of Brazil abroad, it is the face of Brazil for Brazil,” said Haná Vaissman, content director for series scripted in Brazil at Netflix, in an interview with CNN.
She believes that the audiovisual industry is going through a period of heating and the Brazilian public is thirsty for national content. “2022 will be our biggest year in Brazilian productions so far. We will continue to bring, every month, new and exclusive Brazilian content from Netflix, with the greatest variety of genres and formats that we offer to date”, he said.
Comedy, as one of the mainstays of Brazilian entertainment for a long time, seems a natural path to streaming. “What we learned is that [os espectadores] they want more authentic Brazilian stories, and comedy is a genre that Brazilians love, want watch and get involved – he identifies with the characters and the plots. It is these stories and the Brazilian originality that make people from all over the world connect with the country’s productions”, explained Vaissman about the export of content to an international audience.
