White House Announces New Sanctions on Russian Oligarchs; know who will be impacted

The White House announced new sanctions on Russian oligarchs on Thursday in the latest attempt by US President Joe Biden to clamp down on Russian President Vladimir Putin as the invasion of Ukraine progresses.

The new list of individuals described as “companions of Putin and his family members” will be cut off from the US financial system, their assets will be frozen in the country and their properties will be blocked for use, according to a White House newsletter.

There will be full lockdown sanctions on eight Russian elites, in addition to their family members and associates.

That includes a move to target Putin’s ally Alisher Burhanovich Usmanov, “one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals,” according to the White House, and will include his superyacht and private jet.

The US is also sanctioning Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who the White House describes as “a major purveyor of Putin’s propaganda”.

“The United States and governments around the world will work to identify and freeze the assets that Russian elites and their families hold in our respective jurisdictions – their yachts, luxury apartments, cash and other ill-gotten gains,” the newsletter reads. he said.

Individuals who will be subject to full block sanctions are:

  • Nikolai Tokarev (along with his wife Galina, daughter Mayya and their two luxury real estate companies);
  • Boris Rotenberg (along with his wife Karina and their children Roman and Boris);
  • Arkady Rotenberg (along with his sons Pavel and Igor and daughter Liliya);
  • Sergei Chemezov (along with his wife Yekaterina, their son Stanislav and stepdaughter Anastasiya);
  • Igor Shuvalov (along with his five companies, his wife Olga, his son Evgeny and his jet company, his daughter Maria and his company);
  • Yevgeniy Prigozhin (along with his three companies, his wife Polina, their daughter Lyubov and their son Pavel);
  • Peskov, Putin’s press secretary;
  • Alisher Usmanov (His superyacht, one of the biggest in the world and which has just been seized by our ally Germany, and his private jet, one of the biggest private aircraft in Russia).

The US will also impose visa restrictions on 19 oligarchs and 47 of their family members and close associates, the White House newsletter said.

This move will target oligarchs “known for directing, authorizing, funding, significantly supporting or carrying out malign activities in support of Russia’s destabilizing foreign policy.”

And the Treasury Department will also issue sanctions on misinformation targets. This includes the SDN Strategic Culture Foundation and associated vehicles Odna Rodyna, Rhythm of Eurasia and Journal Kamerton; South Front; SDN InfoRos; New Eastern Perspective; Oriental Review; United World International; and Geopolitics.

It will also designate “26 individuals based in Russia and Ukraine who play pivotal roles in these organizations, enabling the Russian Federation government’s efforts to spread disinformation and influence perceptions as part of its invasion of Ukraine.”
