White House: Biden focused on recovery, but welcomes government briefing

US President Joe Biden is “focused on getting better” but is still being “kept up to date” on national security issues, the White House said on Thursday (18).

Homeland security spokesman John Kirby made the comment to reporters during a telephone briefing, saying he had no specific briefing or agenda to report, “but I know he is being kept updated as he normally would be.”

Meanwhile, a government spokesman said there was still “every expectation” that Biden’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would take place in Washington next week.

Kirby said on his call with reporters that it was important to “make sure the president’s health and his recovery from Covid takes priority.” He said it was too early to know what impact that would have on Netanyahu’s meeting.

Biden diagnosed with Covid

Following US President Joe Biden’s recent Covid-19 diagnosis, his campaign says he is doing well.

Biden’s deputy campaign manager, Quentin Fulks, said Thursday (18) that the president is doing well, isolating himself in Delaware, and will continue to hold official meetings and campaign conference calls virtually.

Biden’s campaign reached out to supporters Wednesday night (17), moments after Biden was diagnosed with Covid-19. And the viral post (pun intended) was a hit, officials said.

“I’m sick,” the @JoeBiden account posted on social media platform X, prompting a flurry of questions on the platform.

Three long minutes later, a second post followed: “From Elon Musk and his rich friends trying to buy this election. And if you agree, join here,” with a link to a fundraising page.

As of Thursday morning (18), more than 133 million accounts viewed the original post and 18 million viewed the follow-up post.

It was one of the best social media fundraising posts for the Biden campaign in more than a year, a campaign official said, second only to a post following former President Donald Trump’s conviction in a secret trial.

The official declined to share how much the post raised. But the timing signals how the campaign is looking for less traditional and more creative ways to reach grassroots audiences at a time when major Democratic donors are withholding checks amid concerns about the viability of Biden’s candidacy.
