US President Joseph Biden today signed a National Security Memorandum, launching a new public-private initiative that introduces cybersecurity “performance monitoring” at America’s most important facilities, including wastewater treatment plants and power plants.
The recommendations are voluntary, but the administration hopes that they will force companies to take cybersecurity more seriously.
The initiative comes after several high-profile cyberattacks this year, including a ransomware incident that disrupted a major pipeline. These attacks damaged American companies and government agencies.
The lack of mandatory cybersecurity requirements for critical infrastructure has led to the level of vulnerability the country is at today, one official said.
Biden previously said that Washington sees a growing threat from hackers from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.
