The White House has called for “full transparency” surrounding the circumstances of Alexey Navalny’s death, although it admits there is little confidence in getting a direct answer from Russia about how the opposition leader died.
“It's difficult to get to a point where you can have confidence in what the Russians will say about his death,” said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby on Tuesday. He pointed the finger at Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that “regardless of the current scientific response, Mr. Putin is responsible for it.”
Navalny's body will not be returned to his family for at least another 14 days, his spokeswoman Kira Yarmish said on Monday. Her body will be subjected to “some type of chemical examination” during this period, the spokesperson added.
The White House said that in the absence of a “credible investigation” into Navalny's death, obtaining a clear cause of the Putin opponent's death will be difficult.
“It's difficult to get to a point where we can just take the Russians at their word. So clearly we are calling for full transparency from the Russian government about how he died and we will continue to do so,” Kirby said.
