White House calls on China to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

The White House on Sunday demanded that China condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as Moscow’s attack on its neighbor continues and Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the placement of nuclear forces on high alert.

“This is not the time to stand aside. It is time to speak out and condemn the actions of President Putin and Russia invading a sovereign country,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in an interview with MSNBC.

China in the Security Council

According to the international analyst at CNN, Lourival Sant’Anna, the UN Security Council Meeting this Friday (25) deepened Russia’s isolation. The country was the only one to vote against a resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine and calling for the immediate withdrawal of troops.

China has demonstrated a partnership of convenience with the Russians rather than an alliance by simply abstaining. Thus, it showed that not even the Security Council is willing to embark on the Russian adventure.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told senior European officials on Friday that China respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries, including that of Ukraine, but that Russia’s concerns about the expansion of the Treaty Organization of North Atlantic (NATO) to the east must be properly addressed.

China’s relationship with the US

Also on Friday, China’s Foreign Ministry reacted against US President Joe Biden’s comment that any country that supported an invasion of Russia would be “stained by association”. Responding to Australia’s criticism of maintaining trade relations with Russia, the country said it was based on “mutual respect”.

Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a daily press conference. According to the agency’s representative, China conducts “normal trade and cooperation with Russia”.

“China opposes all illegal and unilateral sanctions and expects relevant parties to handle China-related issues in a way that does not harm China,” the minister said.
