White House says it does not support Israel's decision to close Al Jazeera

The White House said, on Monday (6), that it does not support Israel's decision to close Al Jazeera, a 24-hour news outlet financed by the Qatari government, in the country. The US State Department classified the measure as worrying.

“The work of independent journalism around the world is absolutely vital. It is important for informed citizenship and the public, but it is also important for input into the policymaking process. So we don’t support that,” Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby said Monday.

The State Department said the United States supports a free press.

“We support the work that journalists and media outlets do. It's no secret that we have had our differences with Al Jazeera over the years, including some of the ways they cover this conflict, but we support free media conducting their operations around the world,” said State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, at a press conference.

The decision was also condemned by the Committee to Protect Journalists and the United Nations Human Rights Office.
