The White House said on Sunday (17) that it has not yet seen a “credible” plan from the Israeli government on how it would protect the hundreds of thousands of civilians in the southern Gaza Strip if it moves forward with a military operation in the city of Rafah.
“We will not support, we cannot support, an operation in Rafah that does not have an executable, verifiable and achievable plan to take care of 1.5 million people who are trying to find refuge in Rafah”, highlighted the spokesperson for the National Security Council , John Kirby, on “Fox News Domingo”.
Kirby highlighted that the Israeli government has claimed to have an evacuation plan called “humanitarian islands,” but the U.S. is only open to “any credible plan to take care of them. But we haven’t seen that yet.”
The comments came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said operational plans for action in Rafah had been approved.
When asked on ABC's “This Week” what the U.S. response would be if Israel moved into Rafah the same way it has in other parts of Gaza, Kirby said, “I don't want to get ahead of where we are.”
The head of the World Health Organization and other aid agencies have warned against a potential incursion into Rafah, saying Palestinians sheltering there have already been displaced from other parts of the territory and have nowhere safe to move to.
A CNN previously reported that Gazans who followed evacuation orders were killed by Israeli strikes, underscoring the reality that evacuation zones and military warnings did not guarantee the safety of civilians.
