White House: Submit from the USA has authority to negotiate with Hamas

United States special envoy for hostage affairs, Adam Boehler, has the authority to negotiate directly with Hamas, the White House said on Wednesday (5).

Sources said Boehler has kept conversations with the Palestinian group about the release of hostages in Gaza.

“When it comes to negotiations, the special envoy involved in these discussions has authority,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

She added that they consulted Israel about it and that Boehler’s work is a “good faith effort to do what is right for the American people.”

Israel has performed intense air strikes in the Gaza Strip since 2023, after Hamas invaded the country and killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli counts. In addition, the group keeps dozens of hostages.

Hamas does not recognize Israel as a state and claims Israeli territory for Palestine.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to destroy Hamas military capabilities and recover people detained in Gaza.

In addition to the aerial offensive, the Israeli army makes terrestrial forays into Palestinian territory. This caused much of the population of Gaza to be moved.

The UN and various humanitarian institutions warned of a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, lacking food, medicine and disease dissemination.
