WHO: 15 million deaths from Covid

15 million dead. More than double what was initially estimated. These are the latest WHO data on the pandemic from Covid. According to the World Health Organization, 14.9 million deaths can be associated with the pandemic, an average indication between a minimum of 13.3 million and a maximum of 16.6 million victims registered in two years from 1 January 2020 as of December 31, 2021.

This number contains the Covid deaths officially notified to theWHO from its member countries, between 5 and 6 million, plus deaths not directly caused by the virus, but in various ways caused by it. In this figure there are the deaths who have not been treated for different diseases due to the overload of health systems for Covid patients.

The number counts excess deaths, compared to the average of previous years, in the two-year period 201-2022. For the World Health Organization, many countries have underestimated the figures. The case reported is that of India. the dead here would be 4.7 million, ten times more than the official figures.

84% of these deaths occurred in Southeast Asia, Europe and the American continent. They died from the pandemic more men than women57% versus 43%, and mainly affected the older population.

“These data not only indicate the impact of the pandemic, but also the need for all countries to invest in more resilient health systems capable of supporting essential health services during crises, including stronger health information systems,” said the WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
