Who and by what means uses contactless payments in Russia

RBC published the results of a study by the NAFI Analytical Center, which made a portrait of a typical contactless payment user and told what devices Russians prefer to pay with.

A typical portrait of a person who pays contactlessly with a card or digital device is a man at a young age, with a higher education, occupying the position of a manager or a qualified specialist, a resident of the capital or another large Russian city.

In 2018, 84% of Russians knew about the possibility of paying for a purchase using a smartphone, and by 2021, such users had already become 91%. In addition, 70% of users know that purchases can also be paid using smartwatches and bracelets.

Who and by what means uses contactless payments in Russia

82% of respondents have a bank card, but 62% use it for contactless payments. 32% of Russians prefer to use smartphones for these purposes, and 8% prefer smart watches or bracelets.

32% of contactless payments are made through the Google Pay service, the second place is taken by Apple Pay with 30%, the third is Samsung Pay, the result of which is 17%. Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are most often used in Moscow and St. Petersburg, while Google Pay is used in other large cities of Russia. The Russian service Mir Pay is preferred by only 2% of Russians.
