Two medical students were denounced by injury after publishing a video mocking a young woman who had been subjected to three heart and kidney transplants. The video was recorded days before the death of patient Vitória Chaves da Silva, 26.
“So, I don’t know. This girl is thinking there’s seven lives? I don’t know,” says one of the students in the recording. The publication was erased from social networks on Tuesday (8). Vitória was hospitalized at the Heart Institute (Incor) of the Clinical Hospital of the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMUSP). The cause of the young woman’s death would have been a septic shock and chronic renal failure.
The students were identified as Gabrielli Farias de Souza and Thaís Caldeiras Soares Foffano. Gabrielli is a medical student at the Mooca campus in the East Zone of São Paulo, Anhembi Morumbi University. Thaís, on the other hand, is medical at the Faculty of Human Health and Ecology (phaseh), in Minas Gerais.
THE CNN In a joint note, the institutions mourned the episode and sympathized with families. “The mentioned account does not match the principles and values that guide the performance of this educational institution, nor the commitment of medical, ethical and humanized formation, which so honors our performance,” says the note.
The statement also points out that it was adopted “maximum urgency” to investigate the case, following the guidelines of the Rules of Procedure.
Remember the case
Gabrielli Farias de Souza and Thaís Caldeiras Soares Foffano were denounced after the family of Victoria became aware in early April of a video that was published in February.
In the recording, students appear talking about the case of the patient who was subjected to four transplants, three heart and one in kidney. “The second time, she transplained, she didn’t take the medicines she needed to take, her body kind of rejected and had to transplant again for her mistake,” one of them commented.
The video was recorded at the Heart Institute (Incor) of the Clinical Hospital of the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMUSP). In a statement, FMUSP reported that the students involved in the case are graduates from other institutions and were in the hospital because of an extension course of one month.
“FMUSP vehemently repudiates any form of disrespect for patients and reaffirms non -negotiable commitment to ethics, human dignity and values that guide good medical practice,” he said.
According to the São Paulo Public Security Bureau, the case is investigated as an injury through a police inquiry initiated at the 14th Police District of Pinheiros.
The Public Prosecution Service of São Paulo, by means of a note, told the CNN which was filed, on Tuesday (8), a news of fact reporting what happened. “The case is being analyzed by the prosecution,” he said.
Rare disease
At birth, Vitória was diagnosed with severe congenital heart disease called Ebsstein anomaly, a rare disease that affects the heart valve.
According to a Vitória publication on a social network, the first transplant took place in 2005. The second happened 11 years later, in 2016, due to disease in the coronary veins. The third, and last transplant, took place in 2024.
